Social has become your shop window (whether you like it or not)
For decades, a local shop window was a literal thing: a pane of glass, some lights, and whatever you decided to put behind it. People walking past saw you; people who did not walk past did not.
That has stopped being true. Today many people see your business for the first time on a screen — in the story of someone they know, in a post that shows up while they are doing something else, in a search made from the sofa. First contact has moved, and your glass is still where it always was.
You no longer build the window on your own
The real difference is not that the window is digital now. It is that you no longer control all of it. A good share of what gets seen about your business is posted by other people: whoever had dinner yesterday, whoever recommends your bread, whoever shows off what they just bought.
That can feel unnerving or it can be a huge advantage, and the difference lies in whether you leave it to chance or give it the same attention you used to give the glass.
What has not changed at all
Someone from your area showing your business to other people from your area is still the most effective way to get a new face through the door. That used to happen in a conversation you never saw; now it happens on a screen and you do see it. The mechanism is exactly the same as always.
What to do about it
You do not need to become a content creator or post every day. It is enough to accept that your business is already showing up on other people screens, and to decide whether you want a say in how it shows up: making it easy for the people who feature you, looking after what someone finds when they arrive that way, and replying when somebody talks about you.
