What your business can do and a chain cannot

A neighbourhood business rarely closes all at once. It is usually a long slope: fewer people coming in, rent going up, a chain opening two streets away at prices you cannot match.

The instinctive reaction is to try to compete on the other side field. And on that field you lose: you are not going to win on price, or opening hours, or advertising budget.

The field where the advantage is yours

There are things a chain cannot do by definition, not for lack of willingness. It cannot know anyone by name. It cannot change what it does because three customers asked. It cannot have a story that belongs to this neighbourhood and no other. It cannot improvise.

You have all of that as standard, and you almost never tell anyone.

Why this has become more important, not less

The more automated and interchangeable everything gets, the more value there is in what can only happen in one specific place with specific people. People notice, even when they cannot put a name to it.

What it looks like in practice

It looks like people knowing who is behind the counter. Like whoever comes in leaving with something they would not get elsewhere. And like the people in your area having reasons to tell others — because a neighbour recommendation is exactly the kind of thing a chain cannot buy off a catalogue.
