When someone searches "near me" and an AI answers

Searching for somewhere to eat nearby no longer always returns a list of links. More and more often it returns a written answer: a paragraph recommending two or three places and explaining why.

For a small business that changes something fundamental. You used to compete to appear in a list; now you compete to be mentioned inside an answer.

Where an answer like that comes from

From whatever is written about you out there. Reviews, mentions, posts from people who have been, the information on your listing. If little has been written about your business, there is little to draw on — and no technical trick fixes that.

Why this favours local, not the other way round

It might sound like the big players win again. But an answer to "where can I get a good breakfast around here" is not settled by an advertising budget: it is settled by people who went and said so. And a neighbourhood bar with real regulars has an easier time of that than a chain does.

What is actually in your hands

Keeping the basic information correct and up to date wherever you have already published it. Making it easy for the people who come in to leave a review. And above all, being talked about in places where people genuinely talk, which is exactly what happens when someone from your area shows you to their people.

It is not a new strategy. It is the same one as always, except machines now read it too.
