Trust before reach: the problem with buying followers

Buying followers is easy and cheap. Buying a community's real trust is simply impossible. And in a product built for local commerce, trust is the only asset that actually matters.

Why the number isn't the problem, it's the symptom

When someone artificially inflates their follower count, they're not lying about a figure — they're lying about how much their community actually trusts them. And that lie shows up sooner or later, in engagement, in whether people act on their recommendations, in whether it actually generates visits.

How we guard against this in the product

Connecting Instagram includes a verification with guardrails: if someone tries to manually edit the follower count they declare, they automatically lose the verified badge. We can't stop someone from buying followers on Instagram, but we can stop that inflated number from being presented as a guarantee inside CocoMuny.

The real alternative: keep weighting closeness heavily

That's why the local ranking weighs completed collaborations and real ratings far more heavily than follower count — with an explicit cap on the points followers can contribute. A profile can't buy its way to the top with followers alone; it has to earn it through real collaborations.
